CANISTEO: Raymond J. “Ray” Lockwood, 87, of Fourth St. passed away Tuesday evening November 2, 2021 at Elderwood of Hornell following an extended illness. Ray was born May 1, 1934 in Hornell to the late Lyman and Nina (Margeson) Lockwood. On September 5, 1953 in Hornell, he married the former Lucille H. Sutfin who survives and resides in Canisteo. Ray had been employed with AL. Blades Construction Co. of Hornell for 38 years, retiring as asphalt plant manager. After retiring, Ray could be seen around the neighborhood mowing lawns, snow blowing driveways and sealing blacktop driveways. He enjoyed helping friends and neighbors. He also liked spending time at Duane’s Radiator Shop in Canisteo, helping his son-in-law Steven and just visiting with Steve. Ray and Lucille enjoyed sitting out in their swing visiting with everyone that stopped by. Ray was an avid deer hunter for over 70 years. He enjoyed hunting with his dad and in later years with son John, grandson Johnny and his good friend Frank Russell. Over the years, he also enjoyed many pony pulls with Dean Stewart, fishing with Tom Poyer and camping with family and their camping group buddies, George and Pearl Mulliken, roasting corn and sitting by the bonfire late into the night. Ray’s proudest moments were watching his children and grandchildren grow up to be mothers, fathers and young adults. School events, music programs and sporting events were seldom missed. “Grandpa” was always there cheering them on with his "big bellowing” cheers. Both he and Lucille continued watching the great- grandchildren follow in the footsteps of their parents. Husband, father and grandfather will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. May he rest in peace. Ray was a graduate of Arkport Central School, a member of Morning Star Lodge #65 F&AM in Canisteo and a member of the National Camping Travelers, Inc. In addition to his wife of 68 years, Lucille (Sutfin) Lockwood of Canisteo, Ray is survived by two sons, Larry (Judy) Lockwood and John (Kellie) Lockwood all of Arkport, two daughters Diane McCaig and Terri York both of Canisteo, his 10 wonderful grandchildren: Scott Lockwood, Michael (Amanda) Lockwood, Sara (Rich) Cole, Jennifer Bower, Nathan Calhoun, Hilary York, Morgan York, Amber (Landon) York, Barbie Stewart and Johnny (Regan) Lockwood, 13 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Ray was predeceased by a son-in-law Steve York, four brothers, Roland, Arthur, Jack and William Lockwood and four sisters, Barbara Hance, Ruth Booth, Geraldine Schultz and Pauline Lockwood. The family will receive friends from 4-7 pm Thursday, November 11, at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home in Canisteo where a memorial service will take place immediately following calling hours at 7:00 pm. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Forest Lawn Cemetery in the town of South Dansville. The family would like to thank the staffs of Elderwood at Hornell and Wilmot Cancer Center in Rochester, for their wonderful and compassionate care they gave Ray during his illness. A special thank you to be given to Carol Flint for her friendship and kindness given Ray and our family at such a difficult time.
