Walter H. McLean, 91, of St. Rte. 414, Beaver Dams, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 14, 2025 at home in the care of his loving family.
Walter was born on July 12, 1933 in Corning and was raised there where he was a 1951 graduate of Northside Blodgett High School. He began a long career with the Corning Glass Works, missing his graduation ceremony to start his first shift on the job.
Walter started at the Pressware plant but soon transferred to the Steuben Glass plant working as a gatherer. He had a huge part in the creation of thousands of pieces of Steuben Ware while employed there. He served in the Army National Guard.
Walter was an avid outdoorsman. He spent any free times in the fields and woods or near or on the water to pursue his love of hunting and fishing. His greatest passion was turkey hunting. He was a member of the Hornby Fish and Game Club.
Surviving are his children, Lisa McLean (Michael Hammond) of Watkins Glen and Jay (Amanda) McLean of Gray Court, SC, his grandchildren, Allissa Hammond, Skyler McLean and Emma McLean, his brother, Martin McLean, his sister, Frances Raker and his former wife and continual friend, Susan Shorthouse of Painted Post along with many nieces and nephews.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Justin, Corliss, Mylie, Marcie, Vernon, Franley and Byron.
There will be no formal services at this time.
Arrangements are with the H.P. Smith & Son Funeral Home in Woodhull, NY.
