Where do I start and make it brief. We were inseparable from elementary in Jordan, to every class together all through high school, to being my maid of honor Aug. 1969. As an only child she was my sister and I will miss her forever. Joyce

Andrea and I were best friends. Our friendship began in second grade at the Jordan School on a seesaw. So engrossed in our up and down talking, we ignored all else. Someone yelling from the school door woke us out of our little world and we found ourselves alone on the playground. Though we faced the dreaded “stay after school” punishment, we agreed it was our moment of destiny.
We never shared classes again, but when our families both relocated to the north of Jordan (Knobloch’s Soft Ice Cream), our world came together and timing was perfect – it was the 60s and the Beatles era. I think 90% of our existence then revolved around them (John for her and Paul for me) and 16 Magazine. She wrote out all the lyrics in a notebook and we both created scrap books. When the 1966 Lennon protests erupted (Beatles more popular than Jesus), with her common-sense insight, she wrote a strong rebuttal letter that was published in the Syracuse Post Standard.
We had sewing binges to make school outfits we would share. During the summer months, we put on our bikinis and walked the 2-3 miles to the Jordan Memorial Pool and back as our natural curly hair would turn into frizz halos. Tuesdays were road trips to whatever park where my Dad could play golf and we could hang out by a lake with Mom. We had our own summer book club. She turned me on to Gone with the Wind and I returned the favor with the Iliad and the Odyssey. With driver licenses came after school trips with Kathy (née Sheets) Parnell and assorted friends to Syracuse or Auburn. Several of us entered Auburn Community College while Andrea went to work in Syracuse. For the Fall semester of our second year (1970/71), she joined 4 of us in a half-house rental on Cottage Street in Auburn. It was her leaving that inspired the poem “The Empty Room”.
After 1971, I went to SUNY-Binghamton to pursue my career in archaeology for the rest of my life and moved to California in 1978. We both married and intermittently saw each other. Those were the years of letter writing and a handful of visits home. The 1990s gave us the internet that revitalized our friendship. After my brother died in 2001, I established 2-3 routine visits home to visit Mom until she died in 2009. Andrea would stay with me during those visits at our favorite stomping ground at Wicher Gardens B&B in Auburn from which we would go wine tasting and visiting family and friends (especially at Kathy’s near Holley). It felt like ‘old times’ that gave us that feeling of destiny. Andrea stayed with me during Mom’s last days with the waiting and then the funeral. Through those years up until now, Andrea and I could hang together, catching up on everything in great detail. And ‘oh my!’ the reminiscing of “do you remembers”. We were soul voyagers through a lifetime of memories that only we shared. Her voice will always be in my head and I hope she’ll visit me in my dreams. So for Andrea, it can never be good-by.
My sincere condolences to the Morrill family that I was so fortunate to know over the years and to Andrea's precious Miriam and Roland; her love will see you throughout your lives.
The Empty Room by Patricia Knobloch (Fall 1970, Mr. Mahlsted’s Creative Writing Class. Inspired by my best friend and house mate, Andrea Morrill, after she left for a job in Syracuse and dedicated to her).
The Empty Room
Listening to the silence of an emptied room.
Creating memories of a moving friendship.
To one who will never return to live near me again,
The room next door awaits…
Seeing a shadowed image of the past tenant
Creeping around corners; the ghostlike resemblance
Re-visits and stirs up the mind’s recall,
For the room still awaits…
Can one ever live there again?
Shall the feeling and the atmosphere be regained?
Why can’t loved ones for once remain?
A sorrow lies in a corner and waits…

I only met Andrea a few years ago through our mutual connections on line. I really liked her and enjoyed our friendship and correspondences. We were of the same age and shared generational history, as well as many interests. She was very creative. I am shocked to read of her passing, sent to me by my 2nd cousin, Daniel Fikes. I didn't know she was ill, but it is my prayer that she is out of any pain and discomfort now and rests peacefully. My condolences to Andrea's family.

Q: What will you never forget about Andrea?
A: Andrea loved adventure. Andrea, Nolia (who has passed on recently) and myself (Barbara McMillon) would try to get together for lunch or dinner in Rochester, NY as often as we could until Andrea's eyesight began to fail her. She loved antique furniture, her animals and always spoke highly of her
her daughter and grandson. Rest on Andrea, my friend. You will be missed.
