Obituary of Walter W. Lehmann, Sr.

GREENWOOD: Walter W. Lehmann, Sr., 82, passed away unexpectedly Monday, April 21, 2025 at his home due to natural causes. Walter resided in Greenwood since 1978 and had worked for several years in the maintenance dept. at the HP Hood, Co. and former Crowley’s Food in Arkport retiring after 27 years of employment. He was born May 10, 1942 in Islip, NY to the late Carl C. and Martha (Kuri) Lehmann. On August 24, 1974 in Woodhull, NY, he married the former Hanne-Dore Rahn who predeceased him in august of 2019. Walter was a native of Long Island before moving to the Troupsburg area in 1974. In 1978 he and Hanne-Dore moved to Greenwood where they finally settled and made their home. He also had an excavating business and did a bit of farming raising beef cows and beekeeping producing his own honey. Walter was a man who could never sit still and always enjoyed something to do. Survivors include a son Walter W. Lehmann, Jr, of Spartanburg, SC, daughters Kathy Stoppelberg of Erie, Pa. and Lisa (Sidney) McNeill of Hornell. 9 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by a grandson Kristopher Corfman, a brother Carl Lehmann and a sister Martha Every. The family will receive friends from 4-6 pm Thursday, April 24 at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home in Canisteo where a funeral will take place Friday, April 25 at 11:00 am. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Greenwood, NY. The family asks that in lieu of flowers that family and friends plant a tree in Walt’s memory and any donations can be made to either the Church of Christ Food Pantry, c/o Carolyn Smith, PO Box 965 Greenwood, NY 14839 or to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN, 38105.
