Obituary of Richard C. Townsend

Richard C. Townsend, 65, passed away at his home in Connecticut surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, June 14, 2025. He was the beloved husband of Nancy (Sylvia) Townsend. Born in Philadelphia, PA, he was the son of the late Richard A. and Floris P. (Allen) Townsend. A retired member of the United States Army, joining when he was 17 years old, ironically, Richard passed away on Flag Day which coincided with the 250th Anniversary of the Army, which he proudly served. Richard worked at General Dynamics for 34 years before retiring in 2020. During his time with General Dynamics, he also worked for them in Scotland and Australia, where he made many friends all around the world. Always one for adventure, Richard loved to travel and had a passion for motorcycles and fast cars. He loved working on his home and his yard. Besides his wife, he is survived by his two sisters, Patricia Hutches of Orrville OH and Peggy Sue Ives and her partner Carl Brown of Savona NY, a niece, Melissa Sanford and her partner Lance Traynham of Orrville OH; nephews, Raymond Combs his wife Jessica of Savona NY and Brandon Hutches of Orrville OH; great nephew Trentyn Lewis and great niece Brianna Combs, two step-daughters, Michelle Altruda and her husband Matthew of Lincoln RI and Kelly Salmons of N Kingstown RI; four grandchildren ; Domenic, Madison, Jake, and Luke. He was the brother of the late Roxanne Orvek and Kathleen Rawleigh and uncle to the late Richard Saltsman. Visitation will be held Saturday June 21 from 12:00-2:00 at the H.P. Smith & Son Funeral Home, 1607 Main St. Woodhull, NY immediately followed by a Military Burial at Hedgesville Cemetery, Woodhull, New York.
