Obituary of Frederick H. Groves, Jr.

CANISTEO: Frederick H. “Rick” Groves, Jr. 72, passed away Sunday evening September 28, 2025 at his home with the love and care of his family by his side, after an extended illness. Rick was born April 4, 1953 in Waverly to the late Frederick H. and Minzie A. (Stage) Groves. On June 12, 2002 in Cameron, he married Shirley “Sue” Hadsell who survives and resides in Canisteo. Rick had worked for the former Crowley’s Dairy, Co. of Arkport, now Hood, Inc. for several years loading the trucks for delivery. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish and was a life member of the North American Hunting Club. Rick proudly served our country in the US Marine Corps from 1972-76 obtaining the rank of LCPL. In addition to his wife, he is survived by children, Justine Valentine of Canisteo, Jason (Tammie) Charles of Panama City, FL., Jesse (Sue) Charles of Canisteo, Shelley Coats of Siler City, NC and Cheyenne (Todd) Grace of Sayre, Pa. 15 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers, Steven Groves of Hornell and John (Cathy) Groves of Almond, a sister Candy Mead of Hornell and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by four sisters, Elizabeth Stiles, Sandra Rinaldi, Rosemary Hadsell and Trudy Snyder and two brothers, David Groves and Richard Fisk. There will be no calling hours or service. Final interment will be at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions in Rick’s name may be made to the donor’s choice. Arrangements are in care of the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home in Canisteo.
