Obituary of Jack R. Gross

AVOCA: Jack R. Gross, 82, passed away Sunday, October 26, 2025, at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester following a brief illness. Jack was born October 1, 1943 in Cuba, NY to the late Clyde and Elva (Randolph) Gross. He grew up in Cuba, NY and was a graduate of Rushford Central School. After high school he furthered his education at Houghton College (Class of 1966) where he received a Bachelor’s degree. On October 11, 1969, he married Donna (Stewart) at the Buena Vista Wesleyan Church. Jack and Donna made their home in Avoca where they raised their family and where he taught math and social studies for several years at Avoca Central School. Jack was a member of the Buena Vista Wesleyan Church and was a strong advocate of missions work. His hobbies included baking, genealogy, gardening and reading. In addition to teaching, Jack spent his summers and free time cooking at several summer camps, including Camp Gorton Boy Scout Camp and LeTourneau Christian Conference Center, as well as at Family Life Ministries. He will be remembered by many for his cooking and delicious cinnamon rolls. In addition to his wife Donna of Avoca, Jack is survived by his daughters: Kamala (Gary) Schuck of Prattsburgh, Heidi Gross of Cohocton, Valerie (Mario) Penna of Rochester, and bonus daughter Kendra Finch. He also survived by five grandchildren: Bryce, Braedyn, Mario, Audrey, and PJ. He is survived by four brothers Russell (Debbie), David (Christine), Daniel, Randy (Debbie); his brother-in-law Donald Taylor; and many nieces and nephews. Jack was predeceased by his sister Darlene Taylor. Family and friends are invited to a memorial service for Jack at 10:30 am on Saturday, November 1, 2025, at the Buena Vista Wesleyan Church, 6034 County Route 69, Canisteo with a luncheon to follow. Contributions in Jack’s memory may be made to the Buena Vista Wesleyan Church, 6034 County Route 69, Canisteo, NY 14823. Gifts will be used towards the missions program which was dear to his heart. Arrangements are in care of the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home in Canisteo.
