William D. Erway, 80, of Troupsburg, NY passed away surrounded by loved ones at the St. James Hospital on November 1, 2025.
Bill was born June 23, 1945, to the late Lester and Frances (Hamilton) Erway. His interest in anything automotive stemmed from his father’s “Esso” gas station in Troupsburg. Bill was well known for owning and restoring antique cars and gas pumps. His home in Troupsburg was surrounded by gas station-related memorabilia, including gas pumps, signage and tire pressure gauges.
He married the love of his life, Audra Acker on July 19, 1962 and graduated from Troupsburg Central School in 1964. Bill made his living working for the Steuben County Department of Public Works at the Troupsburg, Woodhull and Greenwood shops throughout the years.
Surviving Bill is his wife Audra Erway of Hornell NY; daughter Penni (Chris) Harrington of Hornell NY; grandchildren Laura (Shane) Baker and Angela Harrington; great-grandchildren Mason Baker, Brielle Coots, Dylan Coots and Kayla Harrington; and sister Roberta Acker of Hornell NY.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his son Richard Erway, infant brother Neil Dean, sister Rita Acker, brothers-in-law Harley Acker and Leon Acker, sisters-in-law Marjorie Welch and Gertrude Vaughn, and niece Sherri Dietrich.
According to Bill’s wishes there will be no services. Arrangements are with the H.P. Smith & Son Inc., Funeral Home, Woodhull NY.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Bill’s name can be made to the Community Church of Troupsburg, in care of Fred Potter.
