Joel W. Allington, 83, of County Route 102, Woodhull, NY, passed away on Sunday, January 26, 2020 at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center in Elmira. Joel was born on November 18, 1936 in Corning, NY to Lorey and Gladys Potter Allington. Joel attended the Merring School in Rathbone during elementary years and graduated from the Addison High School. On August 24, 1957, Joel and the former Joyce L. Colvin were married at the First Baptist Church of Woodhull. They celebrated 62 years of marriage last summer. Joel was employed by the Ingersoll Rand Co. in Painted Post for 9 years and then briefly for Corning Glass Works and a substitute mail carrier. His life work was as a carpenter, employed by Local Carpenter’s Union 700 in Elmira, NY. From 1955 to 1964, Joel served in the National Guard. A former member of the Woodhull Fire Department, Joel was a member of the Elkland Moose, the Addison Eagles Aerie, the Knoxville VFW Post, a social member of the Knoxville Fire Department and a member of the Campbell American Legion War Dads. Joel and Joyce operated the popcorn concession at the Woodhull raceway for 50 years, beginning at the original opening of the track. Joel is survived by his wife, Joyce Allington of Woodhull, his children and their spouses, Brian and Rae Allington of Jasper, Sheila and Chris Woodworth of Cameron Mills, Darlene and Tom Wright of Addison and Rita and Shawn Patterson of Greenwood, 12 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, his brothers, Wally (Virginia) Allington of Daytona Beach, FL and William Allington of Horseheads, his sister, Dr. Marguerite Allington (Patricia Washington) of San Diego, California and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Joel was preceded in death by his grandson, Jeremy Patterson and his brothers, Lorey Allington and Ernie Allington. Friends may call on Friday, January 31 from 1-3 and again from 6-8 pm at the H.P. Smith & Son Inc. Funeral Home, 1607 Main St. Woodhull, NY. A Memorial service will follow the evening visitation at 8 pm with Pastor Brian Diffenbacher officiating. Burial will be in Woodhull Cemetery. Memorials are requested for the Woodhull Fire Department and Ambulance Assoc., PO Box 266, Woodhull, NY 14898.
