Jean Van Wie was without a doubt, one of the nicest women I've been fortunate to have in my life. I can't remember exactly but I think it was the summer I had just turned fifteen, and then again the following summer, when for two weeks each summer she hired me to baby sit Neil and Wayne, do light housework and worst of all prepare the noon meal for Mr. Van Wie (Jerry) and the summer help. She spent those two weeks in an office at a local industry filling in for someone who was on vacation. What I knew about cooking at that point in my life was next to nothing. Jean, however, had everything as prepared as she could so I pretty much just had to finish preparing, put it on the table and endure the teasing from Jerry and the young boys who worked with him. For the rest of my life whenever I saw Jean, whether at the Methodist Church or just downtown, she always made me feel as if she was beyond happy to see me. When I would sing with my sisters, Linda Norton and Fran Bloom, at the Methodist Church she was always so complimentary. She even skipped the Methodist service one Sunday to come hear us sing at the Presbyterian Church. How nice was that? When our brother, Clinton Snyder, was tragically killed, I was so very touched she took the time to write and express her sadness and sympathy. I'm saddened to read of her death but grateful to have had her as a part of my life. Sincerely, Dora Lee (Snyder) Alexander, dorasnyderalexander@gmail.com

I found out on Wednesday, June 3rd that my dear Grandma Jean passed away just a few days short of her 99th birthday. Although I am sad that she is gone I can't help but have joy and peace that she is with Grandpa Jerry again. What a sweet reunion that must have been! I have such wonderful memories of visiting my grandparents' dairy farm while growing up as we only lived about 50 miles away. Things I will always remember doing with Grandma in particular: attending and participating in her line dancing and water aerobics classes, going to the Methodist church with her on Sunday, yard sales, piano duets, visiting grandma's friends, making cinnamon lollipops, eating peanut butter with chocolate cake and apple pie (don't knock it until you try it), personal pan pizzas from Pizza Hut, fish fries, picnics at the pond, harvesting and freezing grandpa's sweet corn, learning to crochet and quilt, tying one of grandma's quilts in her Amish friend's living room, lots of long talks, laughs, smiles and love. I love you Grandma Jean... until we meet again
