Mr. Putnam was, by a wide margin, the most influential person in my course of study. He remains the measure of a great educator and a great man! It was my pleasure to know him. My condolences to Virginia and the rest of the family.

Hugs to the whole family as you go through this difficult time. Though I haven't seen most of you in 30+ years, I haven't forgotten meeting all of you and seeing how much of a great family you all were. Wishing you all the best.

I met Mr. Putnam in 1983 in the A&P lab during my tour of Alfred State College. He spent time showing my mom and I around the lab telling her all about what we would learn throughout the course of the year. As we were getting ready to leave, true to form he pulled open a drawer that stored fetal pigs to see what our reaction would be. When my mom said, “look Kath rubber piggies,” he gave me his “look.” I knew in that moment I liked him. In many ways he reminded me of my own father who I had lost three years prior. I often thought many times God brought him into my life to help me through that loss.
Fast forward to the fall of 1984, first day of class 140 of us gathered together all chatting waiting for our first lesson. No one is paying attention to the front of the room when in walks Mr. Putnam with a ruler in hand and he slams it down on the table. Instant silence fell throughout the room. Talk about making a grand entrance! Our graduation gift to him was a 2x4 made into a ruler because of our first introduction to his class.
Mr. Putnam was always there for us. During my time at Alfred I don’t recall a time when Mr. Putnam was not a part of our lives. He would stay up with us until 1 am studying for practicums and exams, he praised us for doing a good job but not too much though cuz you know us college kids, he knew when we were slacking off, he knew how each of us learned, he knew when we were not listening, he knew when we were whispering to each other, and most importantly he knew each of us better than we knew ourselves both personally and academically.
I remember the first time I returned to Alfred after graduation was for my 10 year sorority reunion. I knew that I needed to see Mr. Putnam during that trip back. Try calling the college today for the phone number of a teacher, thank God for the mid-90’s...lol! The first thing he said to me when we saw each other was, “Hey McCollum you’re looking a little green around the gills. Guess you’re not as young as you used to be when you were a student here.” Busted.....what could I say? We picked up right were we left off without missing a beat! From then on we kept in better touch, seeing each other anytime I was in Alfred and the annual Christmas card (which I’m terrible at sending).
The last time I saw Mr. and Mrs. Putnam was in the fall of 2015 right before we found out my mom was terminally ill. My mom and I drove down to Hornell to meet the Putnams for lunch. It was a great afternoon filled with seamless conversation, stories galore, and many laughs. I am grateful for the memories of that day and all the memories I have of Mr. Putnam.
Upon first hearing the news of his passing I was sick over it. Then I stopped to think about his legacy and all he did throughout his life and I smile. Mr. Putnam touched many people throughout his life, especially his family. He will live on in our hearts and through our stories. To this day, when my Alfred friends and I get together stories of Mr. Putnam and his shenanigans come up. Although we’ve heard the stories before we still laugh as hard as we did the first time they were told.
He will forever be the BEST teacher that I ever had in all my years of education. He will also remain the answer to the security question, “the name of your favorite teacher.”
Please accept my heartfelt condolences for your loss Mrs. Putnam and family. I hope you can take small comfort in knowing just how much he influenced the lives of his students and for that we are forever grateful. Kathleen (McCollum) Diatta, class of 1986.

Dear Ginny and family,
Our hearts ache for you. We were so saddened to learn of Ron’s death. His footprints have been left in many places with many friends. He will be missed by many. He was an excellent teacher at ASC when I went there. He was very kind to my mother at HHS. We enjoyed our times together with you both at auctions and sharing our common joy of antiquing and doing shows. Our deepest sympathy to you and your family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult and sad time. Sandy & Cory Guenter

Mr. P was my AP Professor in college. Then our paths seemed to continue to cross later on at Friendlys and even later at the pharmacy where I worked. I always loved seeing him and Ginny. Please accept my condolences....truly saddened.

I had Mr Putnam as my medical assisting A&P instructor at Alfred and absolutely loved him. He made one of the hardest courses absolutely enjoyable. His charisma and passion for teaching was hard for anyone to match. I graduated with my associates and returned later to go back for my RN. It was because of Mr Putnam pushing me to be my best. He always told me I would make a good nurse and had what it took in the field to make a difference. I never had the opportunity to thank him for giving me that drive. I was fortunate enough when returning for my nursing career to be his “lab assistant “ and work side by side with him setting up his lab practicums and attending his A&P lectures as he said it would be a good review for nursing even though I did it for medical asking. Best advice I ever received as I learned so much more the second time around even though it was officially graded. He was an absolutely brilliant man with passion for the medical field. He called everything as it was. Foremost he always talked of his love for his wife Virginia and his children. I wish now I could have told him what an influence he was on my career and continued learning in education. 31 years later and still in the medical field as an RN, I hope I have been half as influential and have made an impact like he did. RIP Mr Putnam. You will truly be missed. Prayers and thoughts to the family.

Ron was my favorite professor in college. I was a B or C student, I won the Margaret Brady Nursing Clinical Award. But, failed nursing 4. I graduated and then went on to become a LPN. Ron told me he would rather have a B or C nurse with clinical knowledge and compassion than an A book smart nurse any day. Loved that man and his wife and family also. Thoughts and prayers coming to the family.

Ron will be missed and will leave a void in Greenwood. I remember his heartfelt caring and consoling in the ambulance. He was there for Corey when Harlie June was so sick and in the hospital as a baby. We are praying for your family for comfort. May GOD bless you during this difficult time of loss.
