CANISTEO: Judith A. Hommel, 74, of East Main St. passed away Monday (Sept. 10, 2012) at her home with the comfort and love of her family around her, after an extended and brave battle with cancer. Judy was born March 8, 1938 in Essex County, England, to Donald and Elsa (Kermis) Giles. On July 19, 1958, in Manhasset, Long Island, she married James L. Hommel who survives and resides at their home in Canisteo. She was predeceased by her parents and a sister, Gillian Skeates. Though born in England, Judy and her parents moved to the United States in the late 1930's where her father took up business and trade in the fur market. She became a naturalized citizen as a young adult. She was a devoted home maker, wife, mother and grandmother who loved the company of her family. She was a former Girl Scout leader and loved to quilt, do needle point and other various crafts. Judy also worked for a short period of time as a teachers' aid at the former Greenwood Central School. In addition to her husband James Hommel of Canisteo, Judy is survived by three daughters: Nerissa (Bradley) Reisman of Arkport, Janine (Marvin) Schenck of Jasper and Theresa (Scott) Kirk of Frisco, TX. She is also survived by her 9 grand children, Daniel, Andrew and Rebekkah Reisman, Eric (Kari) Schenck, Brandon and Aimee Schenck, Haley, Paige and Chloe Kirk and one great granddaughter Lyla Schenck. The family will receive friends from 1-3 PM Friday at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home, 29 East Main St. in Canisteo, where funeral and committal services will take place immediately following calling hrs. at 3:00 PM with the Rev. Michael Smith, pastor of the Arkport United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Canisteo. Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to Southern Tier Hospice, 11751 East Corning Rd., Corning, N.Y. 14830.
