Obituary of Ruth E. Campbell

Ruth E. Campbell, 90, of Taylor St., Painted Post, NY, passed away at home on Tuesday, December 22, 2020 surrounded by her loving family. Ruth was born in Woodhull, NY on October 26, 1930, a daughter of the late Milford E. and Alice O. (Hargrave) Nichols. Ruth was a graduate of Savona High School. On June 25, 1949, Ruth married Victor R. Campbell at the Painted Post Methodist Church. Victor survives. Ruth worked as a banker with Corning First National Bank and became branch manager at the Erwin Banking Center in Gang Mills. While working, Ruth attended classes at Corning Community College and did course work through the American Institute of Banking. She had also been a sales representative for Avon Products and Tupperware. Ruth and Victor were a very active couple and had many community involvements together. Ruth was a 50 year member of the First Baptist Church of Painted Post and lifetime member of American Baptist Women. She and Victor were active in the Gideon Society and together taught snowmobile operator courses to the youth in the area. Ruth was a former member of the Corning Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was a past President of the Steuben County Unit of the American Cancer Society and its first non physician President. She was a talented, lifelong seamstress. She also raised Chinese Lantern flowers every year on their large lot in Gang Mills and would provide area vendors with supplies of her treasured crop for them to resell. Ruth was described as an amazing cook who loved her family dearly. She was the best mother that any daughter could ever have and she will be deeply missed. Surviving are Ruth’s husband of 71 years, Victor Campbell of Painted Post, her daughters, Diane White of Painted Post, Joanne (Loren) Smith of Painted Post, Suzanne (Joseph) Magliocca of Hammondsport and Mary Ann (William) Becker of Addison, her grandchildren, Lance Butts, Gordon Smith, Jennifer Harvey, Corey Smith, Michael Jones, Lucas Smith, Matthew Jones, Logan Smith, Heather Loud, Andrew Burgio and Nicole Burgio, 17 great grandchildren, her sisters, Elizabeth McCullough of California, Georgianna Lewis of Campbell, Evelyn (Clinton) Wilcox of Beaver Dams, Roberta (Kenneth) Calkins of Campbell, Reta (John) Machuga of Savona and Lynda Peterson of Campbell, her brothers, Lynn (Karla) Nichols of Watkins Glen and Paul (Patricia) Nichols of Campbell, her brother in law, Paul (Clara Mae) Campbell of Painted Post and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Ruth was preceded in death by her in laws, Otto and Rachel Campbell, her siblings, Calvin Nichols, Merton Nichols, Paula Nichols, Marjorie Tyler, Perry Nichols, Carol Russell, Carl Nichols and Mary Fernandes and her sister in law, Norma Ryan. Friends and family may call on Sunday, December 27 from 1 to 4 pm at the H.P. Smith & Son Funeral Home, 1607 Main St., Woodhull, NY. Funeral services will be held there privately for family on Monday with Rev. David Ryall officiating. Ruth’s committal service and burial will follow in Woodhull Cemetery. Memorial donations to honor Ruth are suggested to a charity of one’s choice.
