JASPER: Rosemary E. VanSkiver, 89, of Marsh Hill Rd. passed away peacefully early Thursday morning, May 6, 2021, at her home of 72 years, surrounded by the comfort, care and love of her family. Rosemary was born May 3, 1932 in the town of Canisteo to Lawrence and Gladys (Baker) Payne. On November 11, 1949 in South Canisteo, she married Edgar L. VanSkiver who predeceased her in November of 2011. Rosemary was a lifetime resident of Jasper where she spent her whole life as a farmer’s wife, home maker, mother and grandmother. She was a graduate of Jasper Central School class of 1949 and a life member of the South Canisteo Methodist Church where she was pianist and choir director for many years. She was also very active with the United Methodist Women. Her other interests included camping, painting, floral arranging, ceramics, sewing, Gospilaires and taking many tour trips. Rosemary is survived by four children: Beverly (Bruce) Hunt of Jasper, Edwin (Melinda) VanSkiver of Jasper, Eileen Heckman of Greenwood and Lorraine Barber of Troupsburg. Son-in-law Fred Barber of Jasper, 12 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great- grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters, Phyllis Gerringer of Rush and Carolyn Townsend of Nevada, as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her brothers, Ronald, Harold and Gerald Payne, a sister Marjorie Hadley, grandson Paul Cornell and two infant great-grandsons. The family will receive friends from 4-7pm Monday, May 10th, at the South Canisteo Methodist Church, Ste. Rte. 36 in Canisteo, where a funeral service will take place Tuesday at 11:00 am. Burial will be in the Jasper Cemetery. Masks and social distancing will be required at the church.
