Obituary of Ronald L. O'Dell

CANISTEO: Ronald L. O’Dell, 74, of Depot St. passed away Wednesday afternoon, June 9, 2021 at his home from an extended illness. Born May 11, 1947 in Hornell to the late Ronald G. and Lenora (Sturm) O’Dell, Ron was a life-long resident of the Canisteo Valley and had retired as a foreman at the Sterns & Sterns Textile Company in Hornell. He served our country in the U.S Army during the Vietnam War from 1966-68. On June 4, 1969 in Jasper, he married the former Carol Miller who survives and resides in Canisteo. Ron was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish. He also enjoyed a good meal, loved to make jokes and was the life of the party. He watched many horror movies, was an avid Buffalo Bills fan and enjoyed watching “The Price is Right” on TV with his wife. Last, but not least, Ron was very much a family man, enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and all and all, was an all-around great man. Ron is survived by his wife of 52 years Carol of Canisteo, three daughters, Victoria Root of Hornell, Rebecka O’Dell of Ohio and Leha (Alan) Terry of Buffalo and 8 grandchildren, Aaron and Vanessa Root, Kyra Morgan, Liam Davis, Stella Clark, Eithen Jackson, Xzavier O’Dell and Alan Terry. He is also survived by three brothers, Donald (Donna) O’Dell of Canisteo, William (Dawn) O’Dell of Savona and Steve (Rebecca) O’Dell of Canisteo, several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister Cheryl Spangenburg. The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm Saturday, June 12, at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home in Canisteo, where funeral and committal services, with military honors, will take place immediately following calling hours at 8:00 pm. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Canisteo. Memorial contributions in Ron’s name may be made to Canisteo Wesleyan Church, 25 Greenwood St. Canisteo, N.Y. 14823.
