CANISTEO: Lawrence E. “Larry” Travis, Sr. 80, of North St. passed away Wednesday afternoon, July 28, 2021, at Highland Hospital in Rochester, after an extended illness. Larry was born June 7, 1941 in Hornell to the late Willard and Emma (Chapman) Travis. On January 8, 1963 in Bayonne, N.J. he married the former Valentina Wasilewski who predeceased him in1974. Larry was a glass maker for the Ball & Anchor Co. in Jersey City, N.J. before retiring and moving back to the Canisteo Valley. He was a graduate of Canisteo Central School where he lettered in football, wrestling and track. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served our country proudly from 1959-63. Larry was a great outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing and just being close to nature. He enjoyed watching NASCAR racing and was an avid Buffalo Bills fan. He was also a member of the Canisteo American Legion. Larry is survived by a daughter: Anna Ehmann of Canisteo, a son Lawrence E. Travis, Jr. (Eleanor) of N.J., 2 grandchildren, Jason and Jillian Kenny and one sister, Ruth Mosebach of Howard. He was predeceased by a daughter Olga Travis-Stecher, sister Rosie Stephens and a brother Melvin “Butch” Travis. The family will receive friends from noon-2 pm Saturday, July 31st. at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home in Canisteo, where a funeral service will take place immediately following calling hours at 2:00 pm. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Canisteo. Memorial contributions in Larry’s name may be made to the American Cancer Society.
