CANISTEO: Nora I. Button, 94, of Obes Glen Rd. went home to be with the Lord peacefully Sunday morning August 29, 2021 at her childhood home surrounded by the love and care of her family by her bedside. Nora was born December 31, 1926 in Canisteo to the late John and Anna (Welch) Flahive. On July 12, 1947 she married Robert S. Button at her parent’s home in Obes Glen. They were married 64 years prior to his death in 2011. Nora had been al life- long resident of the Canisteo Valley and was a graduate of Canisteo High School in 1945. She had worked as a seamstress at the former Canisteo Silk Mill on Russell Street, prior to her marriage and 20 years at the former ACME grocery store in Hornell. She was an active life member of the United Methodist Church on East Ave. in Hornell and then the Hornell United Methodist Church on webs Crossing Rd. in Hornell. Her hobbies included gardening, mowing her yard, cooking and baking. Nora and her husband traveled to many country- western music concerts and local fairs and always made a trip to the N.Y. State Fair. She also enjoyed spending time with her family. Many children in her former Greely Ave. Hornell neighborhood would knock on her door and we frequently would hear, “Mrs. Button, do you have a cookie?” and of course she did. In years past she would go in the woods and cut down a Christmas tree for the Bryant School’s classroom where her children attended school. Nora was a gentle and pleasant lady who always had time for others with a warm and welcoming smile. Nora is survived by daughters: Paula Annis of Hornell, Donna (Kenneth) Brenneman of Olean, one son Robert J. Button of Canisteo. Grandchildren: Roger Reynolds, Donald Lorow, Jr., Jason Lorow, Christopher and Shawn Annis, Teri Washburn and John Krakovsky. 5 great grandchildren and 2 great, great grandchildren. Her God daughter Pastor Dena Stevens of Arkport, a special sister-in-law Lois Flahive of Attica and two life-long friends Bernice Cook and Dina Alexander and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Nora was predeceased by a sister Marie Flahive and brother John James Flahive, sisters-in-law Edith Gardiner, Ruth Hoagland and Dorothy Daly. The family will receive friends from 11:00 – 1:00 pm Thursday (Sept. 2, 2021) at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc.
