Obituary of Emmett McNeill

HORNELL/REXVILLE: Emmett McNeill, 82, of John St. (formerly of McDonald Rd, in Rexville) passed away Thursday, September 30, 2021 at Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Pa. following a brief illness. Emmett was born April 1, 1939 in Hornell to the late James and Christina (Horton) McNeill. On August 20, 1976 in Canisteo, he married Patricia “Pat” Luczak who survives and resides in Hornell. Emmett was a dairy farmer in Rexville for 52 years before moving to Hornell. He had also worked at the Gunlocke Company in Wayland for 15 years and at Alfred University at “The Brick”. He was a lifetime member of the Hornell Moose Lodge 210, a lifetime member of the West Union Volunteer Fire Dept in Rexville and was elected the youngest Justice of the Peace in the town of West Union. Emmett served in many capacities at both St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Rexville and St. Ann’s Church in Hornell. Those who knew Emmett, knew he was a true “Irishman” who loved having a good time with his family and friends. He had a great sense of humor, profound memory (exceptional in math), hard working and was well known and loved by all. In addition to his wife Pat, Emmett is survived by his children, Daniel McNeill of Florida, Sidney (Lisa) McNeill of Hornell, Colleen McNeill (Gary Johnston) of Wellsboro, Pa., Nancy (Scott) Thurman of Wisconsin, Joseph (Kim) Schmitt of Oaklahoma, Lorellie Schmitt (Michael Landino) of Wayland, Matthew (Lynda) McNeill of Canisteo and Patrick McNeill of Hornell. One brother Leon (Mary Jane) McNeill of Andover and sister-in-law Jean O. McNeill of Tonawanda, 13 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Emmett was predeceased by sons Michael Schmitt and Nicholas McNeill and a brother Joseph McNeill. The family will receive friends from 1-3 and 5-7 pm Monday, October 4th at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home in Canisteo. A Funeral Mass will be held Tuesday, October 5th at 10:00 am at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Rexville. Burial will be at a future date for immediate family. Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers maybe made to the Hornell Moose Lodge 210, 66 Seneca St. Hornell, NY 14843.
