Obituary of Maralyn J. Reynolds

CANISTEO: Maralyn J. Reynolds, 98, formerly of Green St. passed away peacefully Sunday morning January 2, 2022 at the Updyke Home in Hornell. Maralyn was born October 16, 1923 in Canisteo to the late Carlton D. and Leeta M. (Brasted) Brooks. On June 21, 1946 in Canisteo, she married Gerald F. Reynolds who predeceased her in November of 1976. Maralyn was an assistant librarian for 20 years at the Canisteo Elementary School retiring in 1986. Earlier in her career, she had attended the Rochester Business Institute and had worked at Alfred University in the Admissions office and then worked as a dental assistant for Dr. Kenneth Comfort in Canisteo for 6 years. She substituted teaching in the Canisteo Central School District for 7 years and worked part time as a nurse’s aide at the former St. James Mercy Hospital in Hornell. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Canisteo for over 60 years, where she sang in the choir since she was 13 years old. She served as a Deacon for several years and was a member of the Westminster Guild. Since 1946 Maralyn was a member of the Canisteo Order of the Eastern Star, served as a trustee for the Wimodaughsian Library Club and was a member of the Stitchery women’s club. Maralyn is survived by a son Jerry (Dee) Reynolds of Seminole, FL. a daughter Joanne (Gary) Rice of Howard, 5 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two brothers, Thurlow and Jack Brooks and one sister Charlotte Sprague. The family will receive friends from 1-2 pm Saturday, January 8th, at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home in Canisteo where funeral and committal services will take place immediately following calling hours at 2:00 pm. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Canisteo. Memorial contributions in Maralyn’s name may be made to either the Canisteo First Presbyterian Church, 10 South Main St. Canisteo, NY 14823 or to the Wimodaughsian Free library, 19 West Main St. Canisteo, NY 14823.
