Obituary of Norma P. Swimeley

Norma P. Swimeley, 95, of Wasilla, Alaska, formerly of Palmer, passed away at her home on Sunday, December 26, 2021. Born in Troupsburg, NY on May 4, 1926, Norma was the daughter of the late Benjamin J. and S. Elizabeth (Burnside) Potter. Raised in Troupsburg, she was a graduate of Troupsburg Central School. Following high school she attended the Hornell Business School in Hornell, NY. As a young woman, Norma was employed at the Former White’s General Store in Troupsburg. In 1961, Norma and George Reippel Swimeley were married at Fairbanks, Alaska. They then made their home together in Alaska. George preceded her in death on January 28, 1997. Norma was employed at Nordstrom’s Department Store in Fairbanks and then at Lamont’s Department Store in Fairbanks from where she retired. She was a lifelong member of the Austinburg, PA United Methodist Church and had attended the Palmer Methodist Church. She was a former member of the Sour Dough Homemaker Group in Fairbanks. Surviving is her son and daughter in law, Philip and Melissa Swimeley of Wasilla, her grandchildren, Sarah Swimeley of Anchorage, Gabe, Shaun and Elisha Piaskowski of Wasilla, sister Jean (Keith) Sworts of Fairbanks and several nieces and nephews and numerous great grandchildren . Besides her husband George, Norma was predeceased by her brothers Elbert Potter, Gilbert Potter, Herman Potter and her sister Nellie Tubbs. Friends may call at the H.P. Smith & Son Funeral Home, 1607 Main St. Woodhull, NY on Saturday, January 15 from noon to 1 pm. Funeral services will follow there at 1 pm with Erick Potter officiating. Norma will be laid to rest next to George in Woodlawn Cemetery, Austinburg, PA. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Austinburg Methodist Church, PO Box 265, Knoxville, PA 16928.
