CANISTEO: Thomas R. “Tom” Wood, of Third St. passed away Sunday evening January 30, 2022 at St. James Hospital after being stricken at home. Tom was born December 31, 1939 in Olean to the late Francis and Betty (Colegrove) Wood. On April 24, 1976 in Hornell, he married the former Caroline M. Prisco who survives and resides in Canisteo. Tom was a graduate of Bolivar Central School class of 1958. He attended the Royal Barber and Beauty School in Schenectady where he earned his barber’s license and for more than 60 years was a barber in the Canisteo Valley. He started his business in Hornell in 1959 and in 1976 moved to Canisteo where he continued his business on Depot St. through most of December of 2022. During the years of 1963-69 Tom served our country in the U.S. Army Reserve. Tom was very civic minded and was a former member and past president of the Canisteo Rotary Club and served as secretary from 1991-2004. He received Rotary’s distinguished Paul Harris award in 1996. He was a member of Morning Star Lodge #65 FA&M and was a member of the American Numismatic Association (Coin Collecting) for over 25 years. In addition to his wife Caroline Wood of Canisteo, Tom is survived by a sister Sandra Wood of Wellsville, sister-in-law Theresa Shea of Elmira, a niece Dr. Anne Shea, two nephews, Stephen and Thomas Shea. There will be no public calling hours or service. A private funeral and committal services will be at the convenience of the family at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home in Canisteo. Burial will be in St. Ann’s Cemetery in Hornell. Memorial contributions in Tom’s name may be made to either the Wimodaughsian Free Library, 19 West Main St. Canisteo, NY 14823 or to the Canisteo Fire Department, 14 South Main St. Canisteo, NY 14823.
