CANISTEO: Helen I. Smith, 82, of Bush Hill Rd. passed away Monday morning March 14, 2022 at St. James Hospital.
Helen was born on December 19, 1939 in Bath to the late Frank and Frances (Harrington) Derrick. On May 11, 1958, in Cohocton, she married Sheldon W. Smith who predeceased her on September 27, 2021.
Helen was a former bus driver for the Canisteo-Greenwood School district and had worked as a correctional officer for the Groveland Correctional Facility.
Helen is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Ronald Kennell of Bath, three grandchildren: Joshua (Christina) Kennell of Arkport, Timothy Kennell of Bath and Martina (Shawn) Drake of Canisteo. 4 great grandchildren: Darrius and Mckayla Kennell, Jayse and Marlayna Drake, and her beloved K-9 companion "Buffy".
In addition to her husband she was predeceased by her brother David Derrick.
The family will receive friends from 2-4 pm Sunday, March 20th at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home in Canisteo, where a memorial service will take place immediately following calling hours at 4:00 pm.
Memorial contributions in Helen’s name may be made to the donor’s choice.
