Lanny G. Calkins, 74, of Drake Hill Road, Jasper, NY, passed away on Friday, March 25, 2022 at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center in Elmira. Lanny was born on January 25, 1948 in Woodhull, NY to the late Roy E. and Betty J. (Prentice) Calkins. Raised in Woodhull, he was a 1967 graduate of Woodhull High School. Lanny worked for a brief time for A.L. Blades & Sons in Hornell. In Oct 1967 he entered the US Army and served active duty until May 1969 which was followed by four additional years in the Army Reserves. On October 12, 1968, Lanny and the former Mary Maricle were married at the Woodhull Baptist Church. After leaving the Army, Lanny was again employed at Blades for a couple of years before beginning a 30 year career with the Steuben County Dept. of Public Works. He retired after holding the position of district supervisor for several years. Lanny was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying fishing wherever the opportunity arose and also enjoyed the annual deer hunt in his beloved Steuben County. He loved to be on the water and had always shared boating with his family his entire adult life. Following retirement, Lanny and Mary would spend their winters from 2005 to 2018 traveling the east coast in their RV, stopping at campgrounds along the way to act as campground hosts which allowed them to camp as compensation for their assistance. They often traveled in this manner with their dear friends, Bob and Paula House. Lanny was a life member of the American Legion, having been a longtime member of the Woodhull Memorial Post.
