HOWARD: Donald Lorow, 84, of Howard, passed away Sunday (Dec. 16, 2012) at McAuley Manor following a brief illness. Don was born December 27, 1927 in Hornell to William and Gertrude (Weaver) Lorow. On February 14, 1951 in Hornell he married Joyce Mighells who survives and lives in the town of Howard. He was predeceased by his parents as well as two brothers: Harold and Robert (Geraldine) Lorow and three sisters: Helen (Emmett) Flansburg, Margaret (Charles, Jr.) Cornish and Audrey Conklin. Donald was a veteran of WWII serving in the US Coast Guard Merchant Marines from 1944-45 before being drafted into the US Army in 1946 and honorably discharged in 1949. He was a carpenter by trade working for various construction firms in the area, the last being Hollands Construction of Hornell. He also worked for Pfeil Construction. Don was a life member of the Hornell VFW, member of the Hornell American Legion and former member of the Arkport American Legion. He was a member and Vice President of the Southern Tier High Horse Saddle Club where he thoroughly enjoyed riding horses with his family and friends throughout the region. Don's other interest included his love for fishing. This he enjoyed when ever and where ever he could go. In addition to his wife Joyce, whom he was married to for 61 years, Don is survived by three sons: Donald (Stephanie) Lorow of Canisteo, William Jeffrey (MaryEllen) Lorow of Rock Hill, SC and Michael (Lucinda) Lorow of Angelica. Two daughters: Cynthia (Michael) Cartella and Rebecca (Paul) Dean all of Howard. He is also survived by a sister Eleanor Cornish of Hornell and brother-in-law Raymond Conklin of Avoca, 17 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 1-3 and 6-8 PM Wednesday at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home, 29 East Main St. in Canisteo where funeral and committal services with military honors will take place Thursday at 11:00 AM. Burial will be in Bath National Cemetery, Bath, N.Y.
