Waneta Mae Payne, 88, of Cty. Rte. 1, Campbell, NY, passed away on Tuesday, November 1, 2022 at Corning Hospital. Waneta was born in Woodhull, NY on October 13, 1934 to the late Myron E. and Isabell (Swartwood) Grist. On October 16, 1953, Waneta and Joseph H. Payne were married in Thurston, NY. Joe preceded her in death on July 18, 1995. Waneta was a homemaker and stay at home Mom, roles she cherished. She enjoyed gardening, crocheting, knitting and working with ceramics. She was a former member of the Campbell American Legion Post. Waneta’s greatest enjoyment came for spending time caring for her grandchildren. Surviving are her children, Daniel (Donna) Payne of Campbell, Rickey Payne of Campbell, James Payne of Campbell, Barbara Orcutt of Campbell and Paul (Tracy) Payne of Savona, 9 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, 2 great great granddaughter, her brother, Myron Grist Jr. of Bath and several nieces and nephews. Besides Waneta’s husband Joe, she was predeceased by her brothers, William and Ralph Grist and her sisters, Thelma Coolidge and Eunice Taylor. Friends may call on Friday, November 4 from 12 to 1 pm at the H.P. Smith & Son Funeral Home, 1607 Main St. Woodhull, NY. Funeral services will follow there at 1 pm. Burial will be made in Hope Cemetery, Campbell.
