Obituary of MaryEtta Sutton

JASPER: MaryEtta Sutton, 92, of Ste. Rte. 36 passed away Saturday morning February 25, 2023 at Noyes Memorial Hospital in Dansville following a brief illness. MaryEtta was a lifelong resident of the Jasper area, a devoted farmer’s wife and mother to five wonderful daughters. She was born February 13, 1931 in the town of Greenwood to the late Gordon and Marion (Greene) Barnard and due to circumstance during the Depression Era, was raised by Harold and Esther Dennis during her formative years. On June 29, 1952 in Jasper, she married Richard S. “Dick” Sutton, who predeceased her in August of 2006. MaryEtta attended Hornell Business School and was employed for a short period of 5 years at the former Westinghouse Co. in Bath, after which she turned her entire attention of helping her husband on the family farm and raising their five daughters. She enjoyed her flower garden, cooking and baking, especially blueberry pies and delivering eggs. Those who knew her, knew she had a good hearty laugh amongst family and friends. She enjoyed many Jasper sporting events and was an avid lover of “good ole” country music both past and present. MaryEtta was a member of the former Jasper Grange, the South Canisteo United Methodist Church, and a member of Jasper Senior Citizens Group-enjoying their many activities. She was a very pleasant lady with an infectious smile who loved her family and friends who will be forever in our hearts. Survivors include her daughters: Denise (Phillip) Shanley of Canandaigua,, DeeAnn (Michael) Teribury of Canisteo, Dawn (Rick) Petteys of Jasper, Darlene (Christoher) Button of Jasper and Donna (Philip) Adams of Soavinaw, OK, 13 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two brothers, Harold and Don Barnard and two sisters Irene Barnard and Loretta Vetter. The family will receive friends from 1-3 and 6-8 pm Wednesday, March 1st at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral home in Canisteo, where a funeral service will take place Thursday at 11:00 am with the Revs. Brian Diffenbacher and Peggy Knopf officiating.
