Obituary of David I. Stiles
Please share a memory of David to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
David I. Stiles, 73 of Tuscarora N.Y. passed away suddenly on March 7th, 2023 at Corning Hospital.
Born in Wellsboro P.A. on September 7th, 1949, he was the son of the late Ivan and Gertrude (Matteson) Stiles. He was a graduate of Cowanesque Valley High in 1968 and in 1979 he married Diana Lynn Stiles and was predeceased by her in 2014. After high school and diesel mechanic school, David worked for A&P Foods in Horseheads N.Y., and then Polly-O Dairy in Campbell, N.Y. Later in life he spent his time as a produce farmer.
David enjoyed tinkering, wood working, hunting, fishing, gardening, auctions, flea markets, square dancing, being outdoors, and spending time with his family and many friends. He also enjoyed frequenting the many diners, restaurants, and gas stations in the area to be with friends and enjoy his daily coffee.
David was always there for his children. He taught his children from a young age how to repair cars, farm equipment, lawnmowers, and anything else that broke. He also taught them how to grow and hunt their own food. He was a fine example of what a man and father should be. He gave his children a deep love for the outdoors and they can’t thank him enough for it. He taught them to respect everyone, help anyone, be independent, and not to rely on anyone. He would give them a whipping when they needed, and according to Ivan, “they needed it.” David taught his children to be kind, strong willed, and hard working. They will love him forever and only hope that he is up there dancing with Diane.
Surviving David are his son Ivan (Monica) Stiles of Jackson GA; stepsons Ralph (Melissa) Trenchard of Owego NY, Vincent (Jenny) Gonsman of Louisville KY; stepdaughter Jennie (Scott) Dieffenderfer of Hummelstown PA; grandchildren Ryan, Katie, Taylor, David, Emilee & Aaron; brothers Darwin (Jolene) Stiles of Corning NY, Duane (Joy) Stiles of Westfield PA; sisters Diane (Joe) Canner of Corning NY, Debra Riff of Woodhull NY; several nieces and nephews.
Besides his wife and parents, David is predeceased by his brothers Billy and Gary, and his sister Shirley.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date to give the time to plan.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the ASPCA or your local animal shelter.
Arrangements are with H.P. Smith & Son Funeral Home in Woodhull, NY.
