Obituary of Alice J. Ellison

Please share a memory of Alice to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Alice J. Ellison, 91, of Addison, NY entered into rest Friday, May 12, 2023 at Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, PA, following a brief illness. Her loving son, daughter, and granddaughter were at her side. She was born April 7, 1932 in Bath, NY to John A. Crans and Eliza (Moss) Crans. She attended a rural school in Addison. She married Charles F. Ellison on May 13, 1949. Always moving and very social, Alice was involved with the Red Hat Society for many years. Her hobbies and interests included shopping, bowling, ceramics, quilting, baking, cooking copious amounts of food for family and friends, and watching her son Allen’s chickens (dozens of them) chase crickets and grasshoppers as they followed him around the yard on afternoon walks. She was extremely devoted to her family and friends. She visited them often, and they were always welcome in her home. She found great joy and fulfillment spending time with her grandchildren – driving them wherever they needed to go and attending every athletic event and school function - and also her great grandchildren, who she adored and spoiled, and who are fortunate and blessed to have had so much time to spend with her and make memories. A living embodiment of selflessness and compassion to all who knew her, Alice stepped in on countless occasions throughout her life to offer support, assistance and guidance in many, many different forms to her friends and family, as well as the extended families of her sons- and daughters-in law. She loved fiercely and unconditionally. The unwavering examples she demonstrated – how to treat, nurture, and care for the people you love, whether in good times or hard times – are a large part of her enduring legacy. For nearly 40 years, Alice and her son Allen operated and managed the Addison Flea Market, a long-running local attraction that many area residents surely remember. A linchpin of the weekly event, Alice ran and cooked at a concession stand that sold beverages, several varieties of breakfast sandwiches, and highly popular lunch selections - like hot sausage with peppers and onions, and - most notably, hot dogs served with her signature meat sauce. She is survived by her son Allen Ellison of Addison, her daughter Debera Caracci of Maryville, TN, her grandchildren Brian (Joanna) Killigrew of Rochester, NY, Amy (Eric) Oakley of Painted Post, Marcus (Jessyca) Caracci of Los Angeles, CA, Crystalynn (Joey) Falencik of Maryville, TN, her great grandchildren, Aidan, Noah, Liam, Lochlan, Laaric, and Chloe, and her brothers Roy (June) Crans, of Painted Post, Bill Crans of Woodhull, and Jim Crans of Painted Post, as well as many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. She is predeceased by her parents, her husband, her son Charles L. Ellison (Sept. 28, 1971), her daughter Connie J. Killigrew (November 1987), her brothers Charles, Harold, Basil, Pete and John, Jr., and her sisters Nellie Makitra, Clara Rude, and Janice Crans. A celebration of life will be held for immediate family and invited guests. Donations in Alice’s memory can be made to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), the Veteran’s Association of America, or a local food pantry. Whether you knew Alice or not, anyone and everyone is encouraged to hang a hummingbird feeder on their porch. Arrangements are in the care of H.P. Smith & Son Funeral Home in Woodhull.
