HOWARD: William T. “Bill” Makitra, 76, of Hughes Rd. passed away Saturday, May 13, 2023, at his home due to an extended illness. Bill was born July 8, 1946 in Rochester to the late Peter and Lois (Schoonover) Makitra. He had worked for the Labor’s Local #1358 out of Elmira as a road construction grade foreman, retiring after 28 years of employment. Bill was a proud veteran of the U.S. Marine Corp. serving our country honorably and proudly from 1964-73. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved spending quality time hunting, fishing and just communing with nature. Bill also enjoyed his time spent wintering in Florida. He is survived by two daughters Tonia (Mark) Thompson of South Mills, NC and Melanie Makitra of Portsmouth, VA. Granddaughters, Mallory Thompson and Jacqueline Thompson and one great-granddaughter, Stella Barker. Bill is also survived by four sisters, Nancy (Melvin) Varner of North Cohocton, Mary (Gary) Remchuk of Howard, Marsha Davis of Cohocton and Catherine Sullivan of Murfreesboro, TN; two brothers, Thomas (Donna) Makitra of Bath and Michael (Bonnie) Makitra of Hornell and his companion of many years, Eleanor Koch-Wright of FL and numerous nieces and nephews Per Bill’s request, there will be no public calling hours or service. A private graveside service at Bath National Cemetery will be at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions in Bill’s name may be made to Howard Vol. Fire Dept. 3622 Cty. Rte. 70A, Avoca, NY 14809. Arrangements are with the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home in Canisteo.
