Please share a memory of Alfred to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Alfred “Fred” Cambra, 85, of Parks Road, Addison, passed away at home on Wednesday, July 19, 2023 with his loving wife by his side. Born in Fall River, MA on December 5, 1937, Fred was the son of the late Alfred and Mary J. (Arruda) Cambra. He was raised and attended school in Fall River. In 1955 Fred enlisted in the US Air Force and served until his discharge in 1960. He had various employments through his life including truck driving and working for the Somerset School District in Somerset, MA as a bus driver and mechanic. He later worked for Massachusetts Parks Department where he maintained parks during the spring, summer and fall and would maintain public ice skating rinks in the winter. On April 11, 1983, Fred married the former Sylvia A. Dyl Cordeiro in Swansea, MA. The same year, they discovered the beauty and abundant wildlife of Steuben County and began a quest to find land to buy there. They developed many lasting friendships during this time and eventually found the property that they eventually built their home on in the Town of Woodhull. Fred and Sylvia have been full time residents of Steuben County for over 30 years. Fred loved what the area had to offer for a sportsman, being an avid hunter and fisherman. He found employment in the booming natural gas business in Pennsylvania on pipeline crews with Otis Eastern and later Precision Pipeline. For many years, he was a certified sports official in New York and Pennsylvania and officiated at high school sporting events in softball, baseball, football and basketball. He and Sylvia enjoyed the nearly nightly trips throughout the area for Fred to officiate games. Surviving Fred is Sylvia Cambra, his wife of 40 years, his sons, Scott Cambra of Horseheads, Alfred “Tad” (Michelle) Cambra of Fall River, MA and Steven Cambra of Nashua, NH, his step children, Neil Cordeiro of New Bedford, MA and Donna Cordeiro of Vernon, CT, 10 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, his brother, Wayne (Kathy) Cambra of Addison, his sister, Lillian Santos of Swansea, MA and several nieces and nephews. Friends may call on Wednesday, July 26 from 1 to 3 and 5 to 7 pm at the H.P. Smith & Son Funeral Home, 1607 Main St., Woodhull, NY. Funeral services will follow there at 7 pm with Rev. Patrick Connor officiating. Burial will be made in St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Fall River, MA.
