Obituary of Lida M. Bixby

CANISTEO: Lida M. Bixby, 95, formerly of West Main St. passed away Wednesday afternoon August 9, 2023 at St. James Hospital following a brief illness. Lida had recently resided at the Updyke Home in Hornell and in years past had been a sales clerk at B.K.’s Boutique in Canisteo. She was born May 12, 1928 in Olean, to the late Charles and Kathryn (Lewis) Frost. On June 7, 1947 in Obi, NY. She married Kenneth E. Bixby who predeceased her in January of 2012. Lida lived the better part of her life on West Main St. in Canisteo where she raised her family. She and Ken loved to camp and were members of the Shata Camping Club. Crafts were a very pleasant pastime of Lida’s. She loved to knit and was said to have knitted a sweater in just two days, start to finish. She also enjoyed crocheting and reading. She had at one time attended the former Christian Missionary Alliance Church in Hornell. She is survived by two sons: Larry (Priscilla) Bixby and Michael (Patricia) Bixby, a daughter Sue Cole all of Canisteo, 8 grandchildren, Lisa Wilson-Jones, Becky (Tom) Sable, Chad (Jennifer) Bixby, Jeff (Julie) Cole, Sandy (Dan) Thompson, Amy (Matias) Gonzales, Brent (Sue) Bixby and Beth (Andrew) Smith, 17 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lois Jordan of Obi, NY and Hope (Jerry) Cone of Shinglehouse, Pa, nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Lida was predeceased by a sister Freda Hauck and a brother Lewis “Bud” Frost. The family would like to thank the Updyke’s Willow Ridge home in Hornell for the wonderful care that they gave our Mom. The family will receive friends Monday, August 14, from 1-3 and 6-8 pm at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home in Canisteo where a funeral service will take place Tuesday, August 15, 2023, at 11:00 am. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery in Canisteo.
