Obituary of Alta M. Young

CANISTEO: Alta M. Young, 100, formerly of Third Street, passed away Monday (Feb. 4, 2013) at Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Pa. following a short illness. Alta was born August 8, 1912, in Jasper to Orlando B. and Grace A. (Northrup) Marlatt. On October 26, 1940 in Limestone, N.Y., she married J. Truman Burd who predeceased her in February of 1966. On June 29, 1972 in Canisteo, she married Everett F. Young who predeceased her in February of 1996. She was also predeceased by a son John Burd in June of 1988 and three brothers, Howard, James and Walter Marlatt. Alta was a graduate of the former Canisteo Academy class of 1930 and furthered her education at the Geneseo Normal School graduating in 1933 in Elementary education. She did graduate work at St. Bonaventure University and SUNY Geneseo. She had lived in Portville, N.Y. for 25 years where she taught reading at the Portville Central School. After moving to Canisteo she continued her teaching career in the Canisteo Elementary School with 23 years of combined service retiring in 1975. Alta had lived in Canisteo for 34 years and was a member of the First United Methodist Church, member of the Wimodaughsian Library, the "Stichery" ladies social group and Home Bureau. Since 2009 she has resided at the Updyke Willow Ridge Facility in Hornell where she enjoyed the friendship and care these last three years. Survivors include: daughter-in-law Jan Burd of California, step-daughter, Nancy (Wayne) Hartman of Canisteo, a step-son, David (Sue) Young of Schertz, Texas, sister Mabelle Karns of Arkport, close nephew James Burd of Greenwood. Her 5 grand children: John (Amy) Burd, Jr. and Victoria Lopez all of California, Christopher (Lynn) Young of Texas, Chad (Isabel) Hartman of Virginia and Marcy (Adrian) Morling of Canisteo, 14 great grand children, 2 great, great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. At Alta's request there will be no calling hrs. A memorial service will take place Saturday at 11:00 AM at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home, 29 East Main St. in Canisteo. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery in Canisteo. Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the Wimodaughsian Library, West Main St. Canisteo, N.Y. 14823.
