Obituary of Alfred D. Bruce

CANISTEO: Alfred D. “Al” Bruce, of East Main St. passed away peacefully Tuesday evening December 26, 2023 at Elderwood at Hornell following an extended illness. Al was born January 13, 1940 in Albion, NY to the late Walter and Harriet (Gibson) Bruce. On May 13, 1997 at Lake Tahoe, NV he married Noreen K. Shook who survives and resides in Canisteo. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army proudly serving our country during the Vietnam era. For several years he worked for the First Union Bank in Raleigh, NC before retiring and moving to the Canisteo Valley. During his time in Canisteo and prior to declining health, he had worked part time as news reporter for the Hornell Evening Tribune covering area school board meetings at Canisteo, Alfred-Almond, Arkport and Canaseraga. He also had periodic publications in the “Opinion Column” relative to the surrounding area, its people and life in general. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter Ann Nesbitt of Gates, NY, a granddaughter Jessica Jakenville of Greece, NY, one brother Gordon Bruce of Syracuse and a sister Geraldine VanElzakker of Greece, NY. There will be no calling hours or service. Interment will be at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions in Al’s name may be made to the Hornell Area Humane Society, 7649 Industrial Park Rd. Hornell, NY 14843. Arrangements by H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home in Canisteo, NY.
