Obituary of Shawn E. Houghtaling

CANISTEO: Shawn E. Houghtaling, 40, of Ste. Rte. 36 passed away Monday afternoon, January 8, 2024, at the FF Thompson Hospital in Canandaigua, following a brief illness. Shawn was born March 26, 1983 in North Hornell to Ronald and Marie (Dunham) Houghtaling. He was a graduate of Arkport Central School class of 2002 and a graduate of Alfred University where he earned an Associate’s degree in Computer Art and Design. He was an avid fan of the NY Yankees and had a great warmth of love for his dogs, Jasper and Sonny and he adored his nieces and nephews. He is survived by his parents, Ron and Marie Houghtaling of Canisteo, three sisters Shelly Barbal of Ossining, NY, Jennifer (Adam) Lazar of Philadelphia and Rachael (Jeff) Melnyk of Canisteo, maternal grandmother Wilma Dunham of Arkport as well as several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 1-3 and 6-8 pm Tuesday, January 16th at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home in Canisteo where a funeral will take place Wednesday, January 17th at 11:00 am. Burial will be in Fremont Cemetery in the town of Fremont. Memorial contributions in Shawn’s name may be made to the Hornell Area Humane Society, 7649 Industrial Park Rd. Hornell, NY 14843.
