CANISTEO: Robert Arnold Gams (Bob to most, Bobby to some), recently of Elm Street in Canisteo, left this earthly life April 10, 2024. He was born February 4, 1943, to William F. and Bernice M. Ridgway in Bath, New York. Bob was an avid hunter, enjoyed fishing and was forever roaming his land on Route 36 in Canisteo. Always the dreamer, his little “piece of Heaven” was his pride and joy. Employed by Xerox as a pipefitter in Rochester for over 35 years, he lived with his family in Wayne County for those 35 years plus. Missing the hills of Steuben County, which he faithfully hunted his whole life, he convinced his wife to move back into the southern tier after their four boys had gone their separate ways. Bob was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, serving in the Bishopric for a short time. He also taught the young men’s Sunday School class and they probably learned more about hunting than the gospel. He always had a pocket full of candy to hold their attention. After retiring he truly enjoyed visiting his four son’s families and his grandchildren—six boys and one girl! Just before he passed away, he finally became a great-grandfather for the first time—a boy! He was predeceased by his parents, brothers William and Richard (Pokie), and two sisters BeaKay and Cindy. He is survived by his wife, Anita York Gams, just shy of 61 years, having married her April 12, 1963. He is also survived by four sons, Nathan (Darlou) of Amherst, New Hampshire, Andrew (Belinda) of Marion, New York, Neal of Phoenix, Arizona and Greg (Beverly) of Layton, Utah. He had six grandsons, Nolan, Mason, Gray, Owen, Noah, Payton and Garrin and one granddaughter Alia, great grandson Hudson. He is also survived by his sister Helen (Mike) Dineen. A memorial service will take place on Saturday, June 1st at 1:00 pm at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 7858 Ave of Oaks in Arkport. Memorial Contributions can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in his name, or to the choice of one’s favorite charity. Arrangements are in care of the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home in Canisteo.
