Obituary of Mary Jane Benavidez

Mary Jane Benavidez, 78, of Smith Hill Road, Woodhull, passed away at Arnot Ogden Medical Center in Elmira on Wednesday, February 27, 2013. Mary Jane was born in Woodhull on December 2, 1934, the daughter of William and Mary Jane Tubbs Groves. She was a graduate of Haverling High School in Bath. On March 1, 1986 she married Jose E. "Benny" Benavidez in Colorado Springs, CO. He survives. Mary Jane worked in production at Anchor Glass in Elmira as well as being a homemaker. She later worked for Artistic Greetings in Elmira Heights as a press operator, a job she also had while living in Colorado. Mary Jane was a very talented artist and craftsman, building craft items to sell and collect. She was also a very capable seamstress and an avid reader. Besides her husband Benny of Woodhull, surviving are her children, Dominica Morelli of North Carolina, Philamena (Tom) Roy of Dubois, PA, Susan (Ernie) Bowes of Horseheads, Cheryl Walker (Terry Smith) of Seneca Falls, William (Dena) Tenney of Carlisle, KY, Gerald Walker and Robert (Amy) Walker both of Phelps, her step children, Heidi (Robert) McClure of Denver, CO, James (Di Di) Benavidez of Security, CO and Joseph (Heather) Benavidez of Fountain, CO, her daughter in law, Kathy (John) Bross of Maryland, 26 grandchildren, 43 great grandchildren, her brothers, Joseph Groves of Florida, Donald Groves of Addison and Wallace Groves of Montour Falls, her sisters, Rose Morse of Reading Center, Anna Taylor of Corning, Sadie Graves of Kentucky and Nelle Bliss of Addison, along with many nieces and nephews. Mary Jane was preceded in death by her son, Thomas Morelli, her sisters, Eva VanCise and Wilma Jean Groves and her brothers, Lewis, Clayton and Ivan Groves. Friends may call on Sunday, March 3 from 6-8 PM at the H.P. Smith & Son Inc. Funeral Home, 1607 Main St. Woodhull, NY. Funeral services will be there on Monday at 11 AM with Rev. Brian Diffenbacher officiating. Burial will follow in Woodhull Cemetery.
