Obituary of Richard L. Travis

Richard L. Travis, 78, of Crane St. Addison, passed away at his home on Thursday, May 30 surrounded by his loving family.
Dick was born in Corning on November 1, 1945. He was the son of Albert and Doris VanDerworker Travis. Dick attended Addison Central School. Dick enlisted in the US Navy, serving from November 1962 until March 1965. Soon after leaving the Navy, Dick met the former Pamela Strawser. On October 23, 1965, they were married at the Addison Episcopal Church.
Dick, soon after, started working for Corning Glass Works at the original Erwin Plant. During a layoff from Corning, Dick decided to further his education and enrolled at Corning Community College, where he studied drafting. Dick eventually returned as a contractor working at Corning Glass while being employed by the Middough Corp. from Ohio. He worked for them up to the age of 70 before finally retiring.
Dick was very active in fraternal organizations, particularly the Addison Eagles Aerie where he served for 10 years as secretary and 5 terms as President. He served as a New York State trustee for one year. He also was a longtime member of the Wellsboro Moose Lodge as well as the Greenwood American Legion Post. Dick was a diehard New York Yankees fan and had been a huge fan of NASCAR up until the tragic death of Dale Earnhart.
Dick is survived by his wife of over 58 years, Pamela Travis at home, his children, Tina (Mike) Horne of Beaufort, SC, Michelle (Kenny) Christian of Edenton, NC and Albert “AJ” Travis of Addison, his grandchildren, Amanda Christian, GT Marie Stratton and Julie Christian, his great grandchildren, Devin Williams and Serenity Williams, his sisters-in-law, Sandy Owens (Ken Hotaling) and Phyllis Zuraski along with several nieces and nephews.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Doris Travis, his sister, Bonnie Sweet and his brothers, William Kelley, John Kelley and Robert Kelley.
Friends may call on Saturday, June 15 from 1-3 pm at the H.P. Smith & Son Funeral Home, 1607 Main St. Woodhull, NY. A memorial service will follow there at 3 pm.
Donations in Dick’s memory are suggested for either Paradise Garden Animal Haven in Woodhull or care First Hospice.
