CAMERON: Walter “Walt” Bohomey, Sr. passed away at the age of 91, Monday, June 24, 2024, at his home in Cameron. He is survived by his four-legged daughter, Sophie, his four children: JoAnn Bohomey of Addison, Walter (Tina) Bohomey, Jr. of Cameron Mills, Mary Ellen (Douglas) Wadsworth of Valatie, and Jean Bohomey of Livonia, his German foreign exchange student son, Rainer (Claudia) Cordes; six grandchildren, Brian and Kathleen Bohomey, Erin and Colin Wadsworth, Finja and Nele Cordes, and multiple nieces and nephews. Walt was born on September 28, 1932, in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania, the second of two sons born to George and Helen (O”Konski) Bohomey. On November 12, 1954 in the town of Cameron, he married the love of his life, the former Barbara Stuart, who predeceased him in October of 2020. He was also predeceased by his brother, George, Jr., and a multitude of friends. Walt was a Corporal in the United States Army, having served two years of active duty and five years in the Reserves. In 1955, the Milwaukee Braves Major League Baseball team offered him a Players’ Contract but he declined and went on to be a gentleman farmer and family man. He was a champion softball player, a respected umpire for the Addison Little League, and remained active in sports for most of his adult life. Prior to his retirement, he worked at the former Ingersoll-Rand company for thirty-eight years. He was very active in the community: he served ten years on the School Board of Addison Central School District and was a three-time President of the Board; was Secretary-Treasurer of the Steuben County Magistrates Association; he served on the Corning Community College Advisory Council. Walt dedicated a tremendous amount of time and effort to the Town of Cameron: he was the last surviving Charter member of the Cameron Volunteer Fire Company; he was a Justice of the Peace for the Town of Cameron; he was a representative for the Town of Cameron on the Rural Champions Community Committee. There will be no calling hours. A private graveside service with military honors will be held in the Townline Cemetery, Cameron Mills, at the convenience of the family. The family extends their sincere gratitude to the many family, friends and neighbors for their years of camaraderie and jovial presence. Memorial contributions in Walt’s name may be made to either the Cameron Vol. Fire Dept. or to the Addison Little League. Arrangements are in care of the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home in Canisteo.
