CANISTEO: Ruth L. Mayo, 95, of Chestnut St. passed away peacefully Wednesday evening, July 24, 2024 at her home surrounded by the love and care of her devoted husband and family, following a brief illness.
Ruth was born September 24, 1928 in the town of Hartsville to the late Harland and Cleva (Hawkins) Amidon. On September 6, 1947, nearly 77 years ago, in South Canisteo, she married Deo Mayo who survives and resides in Canisteo.
Ruth was a life-long resident of the Canisteo Valley, growing up in the Hartsville area where she lived for many years raising her family. In later years and after retirement, she and her husband moved to the village of Canisteo. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who enjoyed gardening and canning and freezing her vegetables. She also enjoyed planting and nourishing many flowers.
Ruth was also an avid collector of antique glass. She and her husband spent countless hours traveling and pursuing many auctions and antique stores in search of many types of antiques as well as glass ware. During her time in Hartsville, she proudly served as an election inspector for 40 years and was a former member of the Hartsville Grange.
In addition to her husband she is survived by her four children, Kathleen (Lewis) Edgett of Florence, AZ, James (Carol) Mayo of Troupsburg, Cindy (Paul) Cone of Canisteo and Dennis (Nancy) Mayo of Latrobe, Pa. 12 Grandchildren and several Great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She is also survived by a sister Carol Lefort of Minneola, FL.
She was predeceased by an infant sister Betty Jane Amidon and two brothers, Harold and Paul Amidon.
The family will receive friends from 1-3 and 6-8 pm Saturday, July 27th at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home in Canisteo where a funeral service will take place Sunday, July 28th at 2:00 pm. Burial will be made in Hillside Cemetery in Canisteo.
Memorial contributions in Ruth’s name may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude’s Place, Memphis, TN. 38105.
Arrangements are in care of the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home in Canisteo.
