CANISTEO: James R. Yahnite, 79, affectionately known to many of us as Jim, passed away peacefully on the morning of July 29, 2024, at his home on Bush Hill Road in Canisteo, NY, enveloped in the love and care of his family. Born on May 18, 1945, in St. Mary’s, Pennsylvania, to the late George Yahnite and Margaret “Peg” Palamarchuck, of Emporium Pennsylvania until he moved to New York after college. Jim’s journey through life was one marked by dedication, passion, and a profound love for those around him. Anyone who met Jim will remember his incredible wit, and ability to find the humor in everything and truly connect and help others. In 1967, Jim moved to Canisteo. He devoted his career to teaching anyone who was opening to learning from his vast wisdom of chemistry, physics, earth science, and other physical sciences, while also coaching football and leading the fishing club. His commitment to education and his students was unwavering, leaving an indelible impact on countless young minds. He spent the last 20 years of his teaching career in Geneva. Upon retiring from Geneva High School in 1999, Jim embraced 25 years of retirement with joy and fulfillment. He spent his winters in Melbourne Beach, Florida, and his summers and autumns immersed in hunting, fishing, hiking at Bush Hill, watching football, and playing competitive poker. Jim’s ability to create cherished memories with his 12 grandchildren was nothing short of remarkable. A pillar of strength and inspiration, Jim was also a devoted member of Alcoholics Anonymous, recently celebrating his 45th year of sobriety. His journey and dedication provided hope and support to many in their own struggles. Jim is survived by his beloved wife, Margaret “Peggy” of Canisteo; his children: Matthew (Jill) Yahnite of Bethel Park, PA, Bridget Huszar of Bay City, MI, and Kasandra (David) Staffen of Monongahela, PA; and his step-children: Bridget (Matthew) Johnson of Ward, CO, Paul (Ursula) Turner of Sequim, WA, Megan (Jack) Norton of Kremlin, CO, and James “Danny” Turner of Canandaigua. He also leaves behind his 12 grandchildren and his cherished sister, Mary Margaret (Bob) Kolock of Fort Mill, SC. Jim was preceded in death by his brother, George Yahnite. As we reflect on Jim’s life, we remember a man who selflessly gave of himself to others. He was a dedicated teacher, a passionate coach, a loving family man, and a loyal friend. His legacy of kindness, dedication, and strength will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him. You will forever be in our hearts. Per Jim’s request there will be no calling or services, but he will be buried at St. Mark Cemetery in Emporium PA and a celebration of life on his 80th birthday.
