Obituary of Roger M. Stanton

WHITESVILLE: Roger M. Stanton, 93, of Hill St. passed away peacefully Sunday evening (March 17, 2013) at Wellsville Manor where he had resided since February. Roger was born January 26, 1920, in Ticonderoga, N.Y. to Ernest and Helen (McMurtery) Stanton. On September 4, 1946 in Whitesville he married Pauline M. Lewis who predeceased him in June of 2012. He was also predeceased by a grandson Jeffrey Nye and a brother Donald Stanton. Roger was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during WWII from 1943-46 in the 716 Military Police Battalion. A notable military privilege and honor was bestowed on him while in the service in that he was an active member of the Honor Guard at the burial of President Franklin D. Roosevelt in Hyde Park, N.Y. Roger moved from Crown Point Center to Whitesville in the Spring of 1947 where he settled and made his home. He worked for A.L. Blades Construction and Lang Construction for a short period of time in 1947. He also worked for the former H.C. Deck Chevrolet, Wilson Briggs, car dealerships and retired from serving as manager and mechanic at Cadillac and Oldsmobile of Wellsville. Roger was a former Whitesville Highway Superintendant from 1960-67, Whitesville (Town of Independence) Tax collector from 1982 until 2009. He was a life member of the Whitesville American Legion and Charter member in Crown Pt., N.Y. , member and past president of the Whitesville Vol. Fire Dept. where he served as Fire Commissioner from 1984-2004 and served 50 active years before being honored with a life membership and was a member of the Whitesville Methodist Church. Roger is survived by a daughter Patricia (Dennis) Nye of Arkport, two sons: Michael (Cyndi) Stanton of Scio and Steven Stanton of Whitesville. Grandchildren to include: David (Debi) Nye, Charlayna, Jorie Mae, Wyatt, Jennilyn, Neil and Daniel, Nicholas and Emily. The family will receive friends from Noon-2:00 PM Saturday, at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home, 29 East Main St. in Canisteo, where funeral and committal services with military honors, will take place immediately following calling hrs. at 2 PM. Burial will be in Arkport Heritage Hill Cemetery, Arkport, N.Y. Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to either the Whitesville Fire Company or to the Whitesville Methodist Church, Main St. Whitesville, N.Y. 14897.
