Obituary of Christine Lynn Butler
Please share a memory of Christine to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Christine Lynn Butler (Witter) was born October 12, 1954, in Corning, NY to Wanda Witter (currently of Kane, PA) and Mark Witter (deceased) of Addison, NY.
Christine, along with her three sisters, Cindy Mogren (Tenn), Carol Grillo (Kentucky) and Caren Oswald (Kansas) grew up in a little green house on Front St. in Addison, NY. The four sisters spent many summers racing lawn mowers in the back yard, playing with kittens, and climbing an apple tree. Christine developed a love of reading from an early age which led to the unfortunate loss of her library card when the town librarian did not believe she was reading the books at the rate she was borrowing. Thankfully her mother kept her supplied with books purchased at the local grocery store. Her sisters remember her with a book in one hand and an apple in the other.
She graduated from Addison Central High School in 1972 and from St. James School of Nursing in 1974. Christine worked on the maternity floor at Bethesda Hospital for several years. She was often stopped by women who remembered her helping them bring their babies into the world. She later worked at the VA Center in Bath, NY caring for veterans at the end of life. Following her time in Bath, she spent 26 years in the elementary school nurse in the Canisteo-Greenwood School District. She lovingly cared for children with many icepacks and band aids. She spent many years hearing children shout “Mrs. Butler!” while out in public. This care came full circle as she heard the same “Mrs. Butler!” as she was cared for by her former students in the hospital.
Christine leaves behind her loving husband Darrell Butler of Jasper, NY, their children, Bethany Heckman (Wellsboro), Derek Butler (Regi) of Haymarket, VA, Ian Hanbach (Diedre) of Hampton Bays, NY, Jeffrey Butler (Ashley) of Kingston, VA, and Jillian Hanbach (Onieonta, NY).
She was the proud and loving grandmother of thirteen grandchildren, Grace, Ethan, Aeden, Jacob, Hudson, Harper, London, Asher, Max, Bryn, Adelaide, Annalynn, and Case.
Christine was a gifted seamstress. She enjoyed many hours of crochet and quilting. Her friends and family have been the happy recipients of many handmade gifts throughout the years.
