Obituary of Martha J. Cardman

HORNELL/CANISTEO: Martha J. Cardman, 92, formerly of Canisteo passed away Saturday morning November 30, 2024 at St. James hospital following a short illness. She was born February 18, 1932 in Downey, California, to the late Walter and Bessie (Eddings) Merritt. On May 26, 1954 in Hagerstown, MD, she married Richard “Dick” Cardman who predeceased her in June of 2006. Martha had taught kindergarten for several years for the former Canisteo Central School District and earlier in her career taught in Elkland, Pa. She is survived by a daughter Karen “KC” Yochim of Brielle, NJ, a son Richard “Rick” Cardman of Prattsburgh, two grandchildren, Matthew Yochim of Brielle, NJ and Logan Cardman, of St. Charles, MO, one brother Richard Merritt of Horseheads and former daughter-in-law Kelly Johnson-Cardman, of St. Charles, MO. She was predeceased by her husband Richard “Dick” Cardman in June of 2006 and son-in-law Thomas Yochim. Per Martha’s wishes, there will be no services. Final interment will be at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions in Martha’s name may be made to either the Canisteo Fire Dept. 14 South Main St. Canisteo, NY 14823 or to the Hornell Area Humane Society 7649 Industrial Park Rd. Hornell, NY 14843. Arrangements are in care of the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home in Canisteo.
