Obituary of Lucy A. Stewart

CANISTEO: Lucy A. “Lolly” Stewart, 95, formerly of State Route 36, passed away peacefully December 23, 2024 at Elderwood at Hornell. Lucy, who was better known as “Lolly” owned and operated Stewart’s Plants & Produce in Canisteo for several years. She also assisted her husband Paul in the operation of their farm on Ste. Rte. 36 Canisteo and where they raised their five children. Lolly was very proud of her Italian heritage. Her father immigrating to the United States from Italy on his own at the age of 16. She was born November 3, 1929 in Hornell to Carmen and Mary Louise (Caruso) DiNardo. On October 2, 1948 she married Paul A. Stewart who predeceased her in November of 2017. She was a graduate of St. Ann’s Catholic School class of 1943 and a graduate of Hornell High School class of 1947. She worked at the former Woolworth’s department store in Hornell and was a telephone operator for a short time. She was an active member of the former St. Joachim’s church in Canisteo and was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish in Hornell. Lolly loved attending auctions, coffee with the “ladies” and enjoyed her children and grandchildren’s sporting events and school activities. Other past times included gardening and knitting. Everyone in her family was a recipient of a knitted hat, mittens or maybe an afghan blanket. She is survived by three sons, Paul “Sonny” (Cindy) Stewart of Hornell, Michael Stewart (Vickie Harrison) of Canisteo and William (Terri) Stewart of Canisteo, one daughter Patricia "Patty" (John) Peisher also of Canisteo and a sister Mary Carmella "Liz" Gemmel of Flagler Beach FL, 12 grandchildren, 4 step grandchildren and several great grandchildren and step great grandchildren, as well as nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Lolly was predeceased by an infant son Paul F. Stewart, daughter Mary Stewart in November of 2024, and daughter-in-law Peggy Stewart in September of 2017 a brother Carmen DiNardo and a sister Angela Nasca. There will be no prior calling hours, family and friends are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, January 3, 2025 at 10:00 am at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Hornell. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Churchyard Cemetery in Rexville, where a luncheon will follow for family and friends. Memorial contributions in Lucy’s name may be made to Our Lady of the Valley Parish 27 Erie Ave. Hornell, NY. Arrangements are in care of the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home in Canisteo.
