Obituary of Danny Roy Calkins

Danny Roy Calkins, 78, 0f Fayetteville, NC, formerly of Woodhull, passed away suddenly at his home on December 26, 2024. He was born in Woodhull, NY on November 25, 1946, the oldest child of the late Roy E. and Betty J. (Prentice) Calkins. He was raised in Woodhull and attended Woodhull High School. Danny enlisted in the US Army from 1967 to 1969 which included a 12 month deployment to Vietnam where he was twice wounded and was awarded the Purple Heart. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He also enjoy auto racing, including having his own race car with which he competed at area dirt tracks. Danny was a former member of the Woodhull Fire Department where he had served a term as President. He was also a longtime member of the Greenwood American Legion Post. Danny was employed by the Steuben County Department of Public Works for over 30 years. He was a heavy equipment operator and truck driver, working most of his career from the Greenwood county shop. Surviving are Danny’s children, Debra (Randy) Graham of Woodhull, Paula Nudd of Westfield, Paul Calkins of Woodhull, Danyelle (James) Fisher of Gowanda, NY and Carrie Ann (Dan) Tierney of Almond, several grandchildren and great grandchildren, his siblings, David Calkins (Pat Young) of Woodhull, Cevel Thompson (Larry Enderle) of Corning, Garry Calkins of Woodhull, Colene (Dan) Hulbert of Arkport and Kerry Calkins (Brenda Evingham) of Canisteo his sister-in-law, Mary Calkins of Jasper and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Betty Calkins, his sons, Danny Calkins and Shawn Calkins, his brother, Lanny Calkins and his step daughter, Tracie Grove. Friends may call on Friday, January 10 from 5 to 7 pm at the H.P. Smith & Son Funeral Home, 1607 Main St. Woodhull, NY. Funeral services will be conducted there on Saturday, January 11 at 1 pm. Burial, with military honors, will follow in Woodhull Cemetery.
