Troupsburg, NY | Hugh Garde Benton, 91, of 502 St. Rte. 36, Troupsburg, passed away at home on Monday, June 10, 2013 following a long illness. Hugh was born in Troupsburg on October 27, 1921, the son of Willis Lynn and Cassie A. Hulbert Benton. He was a 73 year alumnus of Troupsburg Central School. On December 31, 1941, he and the former Marietta Mildred Lewis were married in Rexville, NY. Marietta preceded Hugh in death on September 30, 1991. Hugh worked as a young man at Merrill Hosier in Hornell for 12 years and also for the Troupsburg Highway Department. He was a lifelong dairy farmer in the Town of Troupsburg operating Chenango Farm, with his son and grandson following him in the operation of the family farm. He also had worked as a carpenter. He was a 65 year member and past Master of the Troupsburg Grange Lodge 374. Hugh was a life member of the Holstein Association and the Steuben-Allegany Holstein Club where he shared his love for breeding and showing his Holstein herd. He is survived by his daughter, Charlotte Rude of Chattanooga, TN, his son with whom he made his home, William Benton of Troupsburg, his daughter in law, Dianne Benton of Troupsburg, his grandchildren, Rick (Lisa) Rude of Collegedale, TN, Bret & Kris Benton of Troupsburg, Christine Benton of Troupsburg, Terra (Roger) Belleguard of Palm Coast, FL and Andrew (Linda) Benton of Arkansas, 9 great grandchildren, his brothers in law, Fred Lewis of Howard and Jim (Cassie) Lewis of Cortland and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his wife of 50 years Marietta, Hugh was predeceased by his son, Woodford Benton, his grandchildren, Arnold Scott Rude and Lisa Renee Rude, his son in law, Arnold Rude, his brother, Wayne Benton and his sisters, Mavis Lewis and Monnie Buono. Friends may call on Saturday, June 15 from 1-4 PM at the H.P. Smith & Son Inc. Funeral Home, 1607 Main St. Woodhull, NY. His funeral services will follow there at 4 PM with Pastor Trevor Price officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Troupsburg, NY. Memorials in Hugh's name are requested to Care First, 11751 E. Corning Road, Corning, NY 14830 or the Troupsburg Fireman's Ladies Auxiliary.
