Obituary of Robert E. Askins

Hornell, NY passed forever to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, August 18, 2013 surrounded by his loving family. Bob was born in Hornell on June 24, 1934, the son of Howard and Juanita Clukey Askins. He was a graduate of the former Painted Post High School. Bob enlisted in the Army National Guard and was called to active service from 1958 to 1959. He and the former Ruth Sutton were married on December 6, 1969. Ruth survives. As a young man Bob worked for Corning Glass Works and also for local bread companies in the Corning area. He then became engaged in dairy farming briefly in the area and following the 1972 flood moved to Carthage, NY where he continued to farm until he became ill. Bob then moved to Bath, NY where he resided for 28 years and in 2006 he moved to Creve Coeur, Illinois to be near his daughter and her family. He then moved back to Hornell to make his home. He attended the Canisteo Valley Assembly of God Church. Besides Ruth, his wife of 43 years, Bob is survived by four sons, Edward Robert (Rebecca) Askins of Woodhull, James Stewart (Kathy) Askins of Jacksonville, NC, Kelly Lee Askins of Hornell and Artie Leroy Askins of Hornell, two daughters, Kathy (Mike) Giruzzi of Rochester, NY and Mary Lyn (Parish) Cameron of Creve Coeur, Il.. also survived by 13 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, his sister, Martha Gooshaw of Corning, his brother, David (Nancy) Askins of Las Vegas, NV and numerous foster children throughout the 30 years of being a foster parent, both in Jefferson and Steuben Counties. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Juanita Askins, his grandson, Timothy Lee Jordan and his first wife, Dorothy Symonds. A memorial service will be conducted for Bob on Wednesday, August 21 at 11 AM at the Living Waters Church in Hornell with Rev. Gary Miles officiating. Burial will be made in Woodhull Cemetery. Memorials in Bob's name may be made to the Canisteo Valley Assembly of God Church, Glad Tidings Assembly Church or the Hornell Salvation Army.
