Obituary of Harley R. Mayo

Harley R. Mayo, 85, of School St. Jasper, NY passed away on Sunday, September 1, 2013 at The Shore Winds Nursing Facility in Rochester, NY. Born in Jasper on Oct. 9, 1927, Harley was the son of Wayne T. and Elcy M. Drake Mayo. On Sept. 10, 1950, he married the former Phyllis A. Irvine. Phyllis survives. As a young man Harley worked for a time as a New York State conservation officer, was employed by the Steuben County Highway Department and was also an independent truck driver. He then began a long relationship with Keith Paddock and Son Trucking in Jasper as a bulk milk hauler. Following his employment with Paddock's he served for 8 years as the Town of Jasper Highway Superintendent. He was elected to the Steuben County Legislator and served for 14 years as the area legislator. He was a long tome chairman of the public works committee. Surviving are his wife of over 62 years, Phyllis Mayo of Wellsville, his son, Marvin Mayo (Jerry Hoppe) of Clearwater, FL, his daughters and sons in law, Debra and Bill Shea of Jasper, Deanna and Glenn Meteer of Charlotte, NC and Peggy and Paul Taft of Woodhull, his grandchildren, Amy Aldrich, Kelly Marsh, Justin Taft, Colin Taft, Brett O'Dell and Kerri Jones, his great grandchildren, Taylor, Brooke, Kiera, Connor, Liberty, Sierra, Shelby and TJ, his brothers, David (Betty) Mayo of Oldsmar, FL and Deyo (Ruth) Mayo of Canisteo, his sisters, Ruth Darmstadt of Painted Post, Pauline Gottschalk of Jasper and Norma Misewicz of Cottonwood, AZ, his sister in law, Audrey Mayo of Addison, along with many nieces and nephews. Harley was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Harvey Mayo and Richard Mayo and his step mother, Ethel Mayo. Harley's funeral services will be private and held at the convenience of his family. Burial will be in Woodhull Cemetery.
