Obituary of Essie P. Bassett

GREENWOOD: Essie P. Bassett, 92, formerly of Bennetts Creek, Canisteo, went to be with her Lord Monday (Sept. 16, 2013) at St. James Mercy Hospital and was reunited with her daughter Becky, granddaughter Tabatha and her loving husband Carol. Essie was born February 24, 1921 in Troupsburg, to Perry G. and Bertha (Campbell) Zeh. On August 24, 1941 in Palmyra, she married Carol O. Bassett who predeceased her in December of 2001. Essie was a graduate of Jasper Central School class of 1937. She was a member of the Community of Christ of Greenwood since 1941 where she was a former Sunday school teacher and pianist and a member of the Needle Craft Society of the church. Essie was a loving and caring mother and grandmother not only to her own family but to over 20 foster children spreading her love to a much wider circle. Her home was always open to family, many friends, church leaders and missionaries. In recent years she has enjoyed reading, doing word puzzles, and spending time with her family. Essie is survived by three daughters: Lorraine (Richard) Warriner of Greenwood, with whom she resided in Greenwood, Linda (Pat) McCaffrey of Avon and Carolyn (Terry) Smith of Rexville. One son: Leroy (Becky) Bassett of Andover, granddaughter Samantha Bassett of Greenwood, foster- son, Mark (Laura) Bostwick of MO, and three generations of grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister-in-law Cora Burley of NC. The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 7-9 pm Friday at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home 29 East Main St. in Canisteo. A funeral service will take place Saturday at 11:00 AM at the Community of Christ in Greenwood. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Greenwood, N.Y. Memorial contributions in Essie Bassett's name may be made to the Greenwood/Rexville Food Pantry c/o Carolyn Smith, 936 Saunders Rd.
