Obituary of Emma Eileen Schoonover

Emma Eileen Schoonover, 92, of McAuley Manor, North Hornell entered into eternal rest on Thursday, December 26, 2013 at McAuley Manor. Eileen had been a life long resident of the Woodhull area. Born in Troupsburg on August 5, 1921, she was the daughter of Chelmer M. and Cleora M. (Grinolds) Grist. She was a graduate of the first graduating class upon formation of Troupsburg Central School. On August 12, 1939, Eileen married C. Sherman Schoonover. Sherm preceded her in death on February 13, 1976. She later married Hugh Schoonover on June 24, 1979. Hugh died on August 6, 1997. Eileen was also predeceased by her daughter, Cora Schoonover, her son, Charles Schoonover and 5 grandchildren. A woman of great faith, Eileen was a member of the Young Hickory Baptist Church. She had also belonged to the Austinburg Baptist Church where she was a long time Sunday School teacher as well as attending the Troupsburg Baptist Church, being very active in the AWANA youth group. Eileen was a homemaker and very loving Mother and Grandmother. Surviving are her children and their spouses, Julia and James Coleman of Caledonia, Joyce and Beverly Johnston of Port Elgin, Ontario, Fred and Cynthia Schoonover of Mt. Morris, Leah Farley of Leicester, Richard and Mary Schoonover of Piffard, Ruth and David Abbey of Painted Post, Elva Whitehead of Blair, OK, Sarah Schoonover of Lima, James and Nancy Schoonover of Woodhull and Ola and John McShea of York, her step daughter, Althea Nesmith of Lake Butler, FL, 30 grandchildren, 42 great grandchildren, 6 great great grandchildren, her brother, Rev. Ellis Grist of Woodhull, her sisters in law, Lillian (Bob) Schoonover of Sabinsville, Pa, Glenna Yusko of Horseheads and Evelyn Caward of Canisteo as well as nieces, nephews and cousins. Friends may call on Sunday, December 29 from 5:30 to 8:30 PM at the H.P. Smith & Son Inc. Funeral Home, 1607 Main St. Woodhull, NY. Visitation will also be held there on Monday morning from 10 AM to Noon where funeral services will be held at 12 Noon. Rev. Adrian Essigmann will officiate. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Austinburg, Pa. Memorials may be made to the Young Hickory Baptist Church, c/o Ellis Grist, 685 Reynolds Road, Woodhull, NY 14898.
